ABOUT THE ARTIST
Milan Marshall is a fashion designer based in Washington, DC. Milan is currently a B.S. in Visual Communication & Digital Media Arts with a concentration in Fashion Design. She prides herself in her eclectic style from her bold personality and fashion in her everyday style, to the minimalism infused in her designs. Milan gets most of her inspiration and drives from the duality of her parents. Her mother is the owner of an online boutique called Jeweled Runway, while her father is the founder of a healthcare firm. She was always surrounded by entrepreneurs growing up which heavily impacted her work ethic, as well as her edgy business casual style and sleek silhouette designs. She gets a lot of her inspiration from music, films, and international cultural trends. One career goal she hopes to obtain in the future is to create an additional clothing line for The Resistance.
The Resistance Campaign provides a safe haven for social interaction, activism, and acknowledgment through education, awareness, and advocacy. It continues to promote sexual awareness and provide a space for activism through different forms of interactive art and fashion. The various jobs and internships Milan has been a part of have opened doors for her and jolted her progression as a fashion designer. One of her favorite’s favorite fashion and marketing internships was for a black-owned unconventional bridal shop called NAK Design Studio and assisted in various fashion shows. After graduation, she hopes to move to New York and continue pursuing a career as a fashion designer.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Refusal. Activism. A lack of compliance. What does Resistance mean to you? Ask anyone and they would give you a different answer with a few of the same words. I believe that resisting is the act of using your own power to go against the opposing beliefs that are already in effect and change them. I am Milan Marshall, a fashion designer, activist, womanist, and the creator of The Resistance. I strive to create a clothing line to show how sexual assault and other issues in our society need more recognition. While creating The Resistance brand I had a lot of negative and positive feedback from extreme praise to remarks about how I shouldn’t be the face of such a bold topic. As an artist, I want to continue to use my platform to promote change consistently.
